Perioperative Services
Perioperative services at MCG Children’s Medical Center offers compassionate care for your child before and after surgery. We perform more than 4,000 pediatric surgeries every year. This makes MCG one of only two children’s medical centers in the state with specially trained pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists. Our experience, expertise and compassion set us apart.
There are three phases to surgery: pre-op, phase I recovery and phase II recovery.
During pre-op, our staff will take your child’s vital signs and prepare your child for surgery. You will be asked about your child’s allergies to medicines and questions about his medical history. Your child will also receive any special medicine ordered by the anesthesiologist. Phase I is where your child will wake up after surgery. In phase II, we will either prepare you and your child to go home or to recover in the hospital.
Our dedicated and caring staff will explain each step of your child’s surgery in detail. To put your child at ease, a child life specialist will use dolls and imaginative play to explain the surgery process to your child.
You are a vital part of your child’s care team. To make your child more comfortable, you will be allowed to accompany him to surgery if he is older than six months old. After surgery, your child will wake up in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The PACU nurse will provide any instructions that you will need to care for your child at home.
After your child is discharged, you will receive a follow-up call the next day from the PACU nursing staff to see how your child is doing and to see if you have any questions or concerns. If you have an urgent question, please do not wait for our follow-up call, call your surgeon or pediatrician.
