Semen Analysis

What is the purpose of a semen analysis?
Its purpose is to look under the microscope at male semen samples for signs of abnormality in the numbers of sperm, movement of sperm, volume of semen, thickness and thinness of semen, numbers of live sperm and the shapes of sperm. The analysis is done at the Reproductive Laboratories of Augusta.

Why is semen analysis necessary?
Problems with male semen account for 40% of all infertility. Another 40% relate to female reproductive and hormone problems. A full 20% of infertility is related to problems with both partners. One in six (6) couples experiences infertility problems.

What is the procedure for semen analysis?

  • The semen may be collected at home (if you live within 30 minutes of our office) or at the Reproductive Laboratories of Augusta.
  • Two or three ejaculates and, therefore two or three separate appointments, can be necessary for a good semen specimen study. The specimen must be collected by masturbation with clean hands and into a sterile container .
  • Your first step is to schedule an appointment.
  • Then 48-72 hours before the appointment time have an ejaculation. Ejaculate again within 30 minutes of the office appointment at home into the container given to you by the lab and transport the semen specimen to the Lab immediately. Keep the specimen warm by wrapping it in a sock and keeping it close to your body during transport.
OR… 48- 72 hours before your appointment time, have an ejaculation. Then go to the Lab and collect the semen specimen in a private room provided for this purpose.
