SAFE TOYS SHOULD TOP EVERY PARENT'S GIFT-GIVING LIST

December 12, 2002

Augusta, Ga. -- With the holiday season approaching, excitement grows over the newest and most popular toys on the market. SAFE KIDS of East Central Georgia, sponsored by the MCG Children's Medical Center, would like to remind parents of the importance of purchasing age-appropriate toys.

"Every parent believes their child is wonderful," said Rene Hopkins, SAFE KIDS Coordinator, "but it's important not to overestimate your child's abilities when it comes to toy safety. Make sure to purchase toys that are within the proper age guidelines for your child. This is one way to eliminate choking hazards."

Checking warning labels on toys is the easiest way to prevent unintentional injury or choking. Hopkins also suggests checking older toys for damage such as sharp edges or loose parts and storing toys of older and younger children separately. "But nothing beats good, old-fashioned supervision," she said.

Pocket Guide to Age-Appropriate Gifts

When shopping this holiday season, it's a good idea to keep these guidelines in mind when purchasing gifts, said Hopkins.

  • 0 to 1 year olds explore with their eyes, hands and mouth. Crib gyms, floor activity centers, activity quilts, squeaky toys and soft dolls or stuffed animals are good choices.
  • 1 to 3 year olds climb, jump, walk, throw and play rough and tumble games. Try soft blocks, large blocks, push and pull toys, books, and pounding and shaping toys.
  • 3 to 5 year olds like to use their imagination and have toys that are close companions. Look for nontoxic art supplies, pretend toys (e.g. play money, telephone), teddy bears or dolls and outdoor toys (e.g. tricycle and a helmet).
  • 5 to 9 year olds like to be challenged with complex games that teach specific skills and concepts. Arts and crafts kits, puppets, jump ropes, action figures and miniature dolls are appropriate gifts.
  • 9 to 14 year olds develop lifelong skills, hobbies and enjoy team and individual sports. Handheld electronic games, board games, sports equipment (with protective gear), model kits and musical instruments are some popular items.
