“It was vitally important to us that the women who used the facility tell us what their needs are and what we could improve to make the experience better,” says Dr. James Rawson, Chief of Radiology at MCG Health System. “We listened and incorporated their input into the overall design of the area.” What Dr. Rawson and his team heard repeated were words like privacy, comfortable, convenient. “Due to the nature of these diagnostic procedures, women wanted an environment that would protect their privacy, that would be soothing and welcoming and where it would be easy to come and have all their breast health needs fulfilled,” says Dr. Rawson. The redesigned area takes its cue from the look and feel of a spa. Gentle music, soft lighting, original murals and plush furniture in the waiting areas--where complimentary beverages are offered-contribute to the comfort and relaxation of patients. Behind frosted glass doors, private dressing rooms connect to newly centralized treatment areas, making it convenient for women to receive care. Three mammography suites, a stereotactic biopsy suite and a dedicated breast ultrasound room offer complete diagnostic services. In addition, a new patient education area features computer carrels, videos and viewing equipment as well as printed materials to allow women to research and learn more about breast health. “Our mammography area is without a doubt a state-of-the-art facility catering to the needs of women, from its warm, inviting atmosphere to its secure setting with the newest technology,” says Dr. Thomas Wang, an oncologist at MCG Health System who specializes in breast cancer. “Our goal is not only to provide a more comfortable environment for the patient but also to promote education to the community about breast health,” says Dr. Rawson. “Ultimately, we want to empower women in their quest for better health care.” MCG Health System is composed of three separate organizations -- MCG Health, Inc. and the clinical services offered by the faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the members of the Physicians Practice Group. The physicians of MCG Health System are community physicians and faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the Physicians Practice Group, not employees of MCG Health Inc. MCG Health, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation operating the MCG Medical Center, MCG Children’s Medical Center, the MCG Sports Medicine Center, MCG Ambulatory Care Center, the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center and related clinical facilities and services. MCG Health, Inc. was formed to support the research and education mission of the Medical College of Georgia and to build the economic growth of the CSRA, the state of Georgia and the Southeast by providing an environment for faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the Physicians Practice Group and community physicians to deliver the highest level of primary and specialty health care.
