MCG HEALTH SYSTEM HELPED COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS RAISE MORE THAN $144,000 IN 2004December 27, 2004Augusta, GA In 2004, MCG Health System helped community organizations raise $144,431 to support local programs and services ranging from heart research to feeding the homeless.

“Since MCG Health, Inc.’s inception, we have been proud to be able to actively participate in and support our community, not only by purchasing goods and services locally, but also through direct participation in community fund-raising activities,” said Don Snell, President and CEO, MCG Health, Inc. “I thank our employees for their enthusiasm and compassion in raising funds for local associations, and participating in walks and other events. They have truly demonstrated their commitment to raising awareness of heart disease, cancer and other diseases as well as to supporting needed social services in our community.”

Some of the local agencies that MCG Health System benefited this past year include the United Way, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the National Parkinson Foundation and the ALS Association.

MCG Health, Inc. was named one of the top 15 major employers in employee giving by the United Way, thanks to a donation of $64,581. The health system was also a Red Cap sponsor for this year’s American Heart Walk and raised $56,000 for the American Heart Association.

"One of the real benefits we gained in the July 1, 2000, creation of MCG Health, Inc., the not-for-profit corporation that manages the hospital and clinics, was our ability to be a better corporate citizen, buying as many goods and services from the community as possible, and directly participating in community fund-raising activities,” said Mr. Snell. “Prior to July 1, 2000, we had to purchase the majority of our goods and services off of state contracts, and could only participate in community fund-raising through the state's one pledge program. Now we are able to focus resources directly into the local community."

MCG Health System is composed of three separate organizations -- MCG Health, Inc. and the clinical services offered by the faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the members of the Physicians Practice Group. The physicians of MCG Health System are community physicians, faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia, and employees of the Physicians Practice Group, not employees of MCG Health Inc. MCG Health, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation operating the MCG Medical Center, MCG Children’s Medical Center, the MCG Sports Medicine Center, MCG Ambulatory Care Center, the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center and related clinical facilities and services. MCG Health, Inc. was formed to support the research and education mission of the Medical College of Georgia and to build the economic growth of the CSRA, the state of Georgia and the Southeast by providing an environment for faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the Physicians Practice Group and community physicians to deliver the highest level of primary and specialty health care.
