National Mental Health Month Events HeldMay 12, 2004Augusta, GA

Behavioral health affects your personal relationships and your work, as well as your physical health. It is estimated that one in five adults will suffer during their lifetime from some form of mental disorder, ranging from depression and anxiety to more severe disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

In recognition of May as National Mental Health Month, the MCG Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior will offer a number of free special lectures focusing on various aspects of mental health.

  • Dr. Alex Mabe will present “Raising Kids God’s Way” at the First Baptist Church of Belvedere every Sunday in May from 5 to 5:45 p.m. The event is open to all parents and other caregivers.
  • Dr. Meera Narasimhan of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine will present “Treatment of Resistant Depression” during the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds on Thursday, May 20 at 8 a.m. in the Small Auditorium, MCG Auditoria Center.
  • Brenda Browning and Dr. Bernard Davidson will present a lunchtime seminar on the Child and Adolescent Respond and Evaluate (CARE) Program on May 21 from 11 a.m. to noon at room BC 140, MCG Auditoria Center. CARE provides crisis intervention and counseling for children and families.
  • Dr. Amy House and Dr. Melanie Bliss will present “Understanding Traumatic Stress” on May 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Room 2220 at the Outpatient Psychiatry building, 1515 Pope Ave. The seminar will focus on traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder, how to provide support to someone who was traumatized and how to get help, even if the trauma occurred years ago.
  • Dr. Susan Sato will present “Stress and Anxiety Disorders: All Stressed Up and Nowhere to Go” on May 26 from 11 a.m. to noon at room BC 130, MCG Auditoria Center.
  • Dr. Laura Roberts of the Medical College of Wisconsin will present “Ethical Considerations in Mental Illness Research” during the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds on Thursday, May 27, at 8 a.m. and at noon in the Small Auditorium, MCG Auditoria Center.
