MCG Health System Earns Continued AccreditationMay 24, 2005Augusta, GA

MCG Health System has earned continued accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

"We are extraordinarily pleased with the results from the recent JCAHO reaccreditation process," said Don Snell, President and CEO of MCG Health, Inc. "The surveyors were very complimentary about our organization and the quality of care that we deliver. While we received some minor recommendations, our health system was described as outstanding, as were our staff."

JCAHO holds health systems accountable to thousands of standards. Four surveyors visited every floor and every clinic within the health system. Using a detailed process known as "tracer methodology," surveyors tracked care for more than 20 patients within the health system and interviewed physicians, nurses and staff to ensure the appropriate safety and quality standards were being met. Tracer methodology is a survey process employed by JCAHO to ensure health systems are held to the highest standards.

"This has been the work of many and a great team effort. The surveyors were able to get a true vision of our institution, the level of our collaboration, what we are producing and where we are going. And while the health system has been focused for the past three years on preparing for this visit, in truth, this is not about JCAHO," said Snell. "This is about the fact that MCG Health System provides the very best in patient care, and we demonstrate this every day."

JCAHO evaluates and accredits nearly 16,000 health care organizations and programs across the United States and is the nation’s predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Its mission is to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations.

MCG Health System is composed of three separate organizations -- MCG Health, Inc. and the clinical services offered by the faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the members of the Physicians Practice Group. The physicians of MCG Health System are community physicians, faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia, and employees of the Physicians Practice Group, not employees of MCG Health Inc. MCG Health, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation operating the MCG Medical Center, MCG Children’s Medical Center, the MCG Sports Medicine Center, MCG Ambulatory Care Center, the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center and related clinical facilities and services. MCG Health, Inc. was formed to support the research and education mission of the Medical College of Georgia and to build the economic growth of the CSRA, the state of Georgia and the Southeast by providing an environment for faculty employees of the Medical College of Georgia and the Physicians Practice Group and community physicians to deliver the highest level of primary and specialty health care.
