MCG Health Behavior Team Relocates

January 8, 2008

Augusta, GA--

Step aside Ty Pennington. The MCG Psychiatry and Health Behavior department recently experienced an extreme makeover of its own when it relocated to the historic Stoney Building at 997 St. Sebastian Way.

Much like the popular television show, the makeover included new paint, carpeting, tile, lighting and furniture. In addition, patients, employees and visitors also will enjoy separate adult and child/adolescent waiting rooms with pod-like seating for greater privacy. Other amenities include more research rooms, larger group therapy rooms; a private area for taking vital signs; new security features; and a larger, more private patient registration desk.

“This was a collaborative effort in which we partnered with our patient advisors. They were very instrumental in the space being designed and furnished so as to create a healing environment,” said Dr. Peter Buckley, Chairman of Psychiatry and Health Behavior.

The MCG Psychiatry and Health Behavior team is made up of psychologists and psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers, therapists and other mental health professionals committed to providing comprehensive evaluations and appropriate levels of treatment.

Specialized programs care for the entire community. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program treats children with emotional and behavioral problems and developmental disorders, including ADHD, depression, anxiety and autism. Family involvement is encouraged at all levels. In addition, MCG Health offers East Georgia's only inpatient child/adolescent unit for psychiatric treatment.

Adult services focus on providing therapy for chronic pain or medical illnesses; depression and anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive, and panic disorders; and therapy for disorders more common to women, such as infertility, eating disorders, assault trauma or postpartum depression. The Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders Program utilizes the most recent research to offer advanced treatment of severe and debilitating mental illnesses. Adult inpatient services include acute care for both mental health and substance abuse disorders, and a geriatric psychiatry unit specializing in the treatment of the disorders of aging, such as delirium, psychosis and depression.

The Stoney Building is listed with the Georgia Historical Society. It is formerly known as the Stoney Nurses Home of the Lamar School of Nursing, and once served as a dormitory for nurses. Some of those nurses, from graduating classes in the 1940s and ’50s, attended the recent open house celebrating the Department’s relocation.
