MCGHealth Breast Health Services

MCGHealth Breast Health Services are a unique feature of MCGHealth. Through this specialized screening and treatment initiative, patients with benign and cancerous breast conditions may undergo mammography, physical examination, diagnostic and therapeutic surgery, counseling and multidisciplinary treatment of malignancy. Treatment is always tailored to a patient's stage, age, and individual desires and the patient is encouraged to remain in the care of her primary care physician throughout treatment. A breast cancer support group and an 'I Can Cope' cancer support group are available for patients.

Active research to find new and improved methods of treating breast cancer is an ongoing focus of the center. The center also participates in national clinical trials such as the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG).

Breast Health Guidelines

Maintain a healthy body weight

Exercise 30 to 45 minutes a day, five days a week or more.

Eat at least five servings of fruits or vegetables daily.

Have your breast cancer risk assessed at age 35.

Follow the American Cancer Society's screening guidelines for breast cancer. The condition can usually be treated effectively if diagnosed early.

Eliminate tobacco and don't drink more than one alcoholic drink a day, if you drink at all.

Speak to your physician about your use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, as they may increase your risk.
