The Cardiology Cath Lab at MCGHealth offers access to all the latest devices used in catheter based diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. It consists of two catheterization suites, one of which is equipped with state-of-the-art flat panel high-resolution cine less technology for delivery of interventional cardiac services.
Interventional Cardiology services consist of gaining access to cardiac circulation by non-surgical means, without using anesthesia, and employing techniques to diagnose and treat blockages in coronary arteries. This minimizes patient discomfort, length of hospital stay, and need for open heart surgery. Among the range of services offered are balloon angioplasty, coronary stent implantation, vascular brachytherapy and coronary atherectomy.

In Balloon Angioplasty, a balloon catheter is inserted into the arterial system, positioned at the area of blockage, and inflated to compress the fatty deposits against the arterial wall.

This opens up the artery so blood can flow normally. A Stent (small metal structure) is often used with the balloon catheter, and remains in the artery to keep it open after the balloon is removed.

MCGHealth currently endeavors to provide primary angioplasty to all patients who arrive with heart attacks who need reperfusion. This is a treatment which increases the chances of surviving a heart attack. We hope to soon provide interventional therapy for non-coronary vascular disease.
