There is nothing wrong with eating out and treating yourself. But sometimes eating out can be bad for your health, especially when it's for convenience and not for enjoyment. In particular, that means fast food. Fast food in the US has come under a lot of pressure lately for its influence on the national epidemic of obesity. Some fast food is loaded with saturated fat, preservatives, sugars, and other ingredients that are just not good for your body. It's best to avoid super-sizing your value meals, even when you're in a rush. There are lots of healthy options at fast food restaurants, including salads and grilled sandwiches. Check out the salad menu next time you’re at the drive-thru—fast food restaurants are making more and more healthy and appetizing alternatives available lately. If you absolutely love French fries or the ice cream, treat yourself now and again, but don’t make them a habit.

When you are out for a meal, keep your eyes peeled for healthy options. Usually there will be a healthy option section on most menus or a vegetarian section if that's what you prefer. A great way to stay healthy when eating out is to get some vegetables or fruits in as a side item with a sandwich (instead of the fries). If you know you are going to eat out and you don't want to make a healthy decision (perhaps you're really craving chicken fingers or pizza), then focus on fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods throughout the rest of the day to balance yourself.

Remember that you don't have to deny yourself every pleasure to be healthy, just be conscious and make smart decisions.
