Augusta, GA--
Regina Medeiros, RN, MHSA, has been named to the Georgia Statewide Trauma Action Team Advisory Board. She is the Trauma Program Manager at MCGHealth Medical Center.
Medeiros joins healthcare providers, local government officials and business leaders from every region of Georgia on the 19-member advisory board, which is tasked with guiding a trauma awareness campaign to educate Georgians about the need for a statewide trauma system. Currently, Georgia is served by only 15 trauma centers - about half the number needed, according to state health officials - and many areas of the state currently lack access to adequate emergency transportation. As a result, 700 Georgians die each year because they are injured too far from the nearest trauma center.
Medeiros will assist with grassroots efforts, participate in speaking opportunities and media interviews, and provide feedback for the campaign, which is funded through a grant from Healthcare Georgia Foundation.
Medeiros joined MCGHealth in 1990 and has worked as a staff nurse in both the general surgical setting and the Shock Trauma Intensive Care Unit. She was a nurse manager in the burn unit and a clinical nurse intensivist in the Shock Trauma ICU before taking the position as trauma coordinator in 1994.
Medeiros currently serves as a member of the Education Committee of the Region VI Georgia Emergency Medical Services Council; as a state trauma consultant for the Georgia Department of Human Resources; as a reviewer for the Journal of Trauma Nursing; and as an Administrative Officer for the Disaster Medical Assistance Team of the National Disaster Medical System in the Department of Health and Human Services.
