MCGHealth Sponsors Augusta’s First Westobou Festival

July 8, 2008

Augusta, GA--

MCGHealth recently became the Presenting Sponsor of Augusta’s Westobou Festival, September 18 through 27, 2008.  The festival will feature 10 days of performances and presentations by local, regional, and nationally-recognized artists in dance, music, theatre and visual arts.  The event will be held at a host of venues spread across downtown Augusta, including Augusta State University and Paine College.

“We look forward to being an active benefactor of this inaugural event as well as welcoming some of its performances within the walls of our hospitals and clinics.  It is a natural fit for us because of our Healing Arts Program.  For many years, we have hosted artistic exhibitions and musical performances in our hospitals and clinics to promote a healing environment.  It's well known that art has a positive effect on a person's well being. Through our Healing Arts Program, we hope to provide a unique and healing touch to those for whom we care” said Sheila O’Neal, Vice President of Strategic Support and Philanthropy.

“We are thrilled to have MCGHealth be our Presenting Sponsor and it demonstrates just how important the arts are to the community." said Roger Duke, Finance Chairperson of the Westobou Festival.  “Our goal is to increase the regional appeal of the festival in subsequent years and we’ll reach this goal with the support of benefactors such as MCGHealth.”

About the Westobou Festival
The Westobou Festival was conceived in 2005 by the Trustees of the Academy of Richmond County, in conjunction with their work on behalf of the Porter Fleming Foundation, which was created in 1963 by Augusta resident Berry Fleming to honor his father, Porter Fleming.  In 2005, the Foundation received a sizeable bequest from the Estate of Shirley Fleming, Berry’s daughter, after which the Trustees resolved to create an independent project celebrating excellence in the arts.  The Foundation and Trustees have contracted with the Greater Augusta Arts Council to produce the Westobou Festival.
