Augusta, GA--
Nicole Aenchbacher, RN, BSN, recently became certified through the EduCare Breast Health Navigator training program to serve as a breast health educator and patient care manager. She is the Breast Health Navigator at MCGHealth.
The 40-hour comprehensive training program provided instruction in all aspects of breast health, including how to:
- Coordinate a comprehensive breast health program.
- Provide comprehensive patient education.
- Develop specialty clinics for breast health.
- Implement successful support programs for patients and families.
- Integrate complementary care issues.
- Plan successful community outreach programs.
"Breast cancer care has many clinical and service challenges. A diagnosis affects both the physical and mental well-being of patients. It alters their self-esteem, body image and sexuality," said Aenchbacher.
"Breast cancer patients need a coach, an advocate, or just to know someone is in their corner and will not abandon them. The first thing I do for our patients is offer them support, especially emotional support."
From there, Aenchbacher offers support in more tangible ways, including scheduling appointments, tracking progress and educating patients on the procedures and treatments they are receiving. She provides access to nutrition counseling and physical or emotional therapy. She also facilitates the MCGHealth Breast Cancer Support Group, which meets monthly.
Aenchbacher brings a combined 10 years of experience in radiology and oncology nursing to her role as a breast health navigator. "My background has helped me better understand the world of medicine, especially cancer care. But for most of our patients, a cancer diagnosis is just so complex. My goal is to take away that complexity so that my patients can focus all their energy on fighting this disease," Aenchbacher said.
