History of MCG Health, Inc.

Several years ago, the leadership of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, the Chancellor’s Office and the Medical College of Georgia recognized that the existing management and financial structure of the hospitals and clinics could not continue to support the institution, given the economic and competitive environment.  In July 2000, MCG Health, Inc. was activated as the not-for-profit corporation to manage the operations of the hospitals and clinics.

The establishment of MCG Health, Inc. provided a considerable turnaround from a potential $25 million deficit in April 2000 to a $20.7 million margin within an 18-month period.  The financial strength of MCG hospitals and clinics is more stable now than ever before.  This financial success allows us to provide the Medical College of Georgia with a percentage of our operating margin to fund medical education and research programs.  In October 2001, MCGHI gave nearly $9 million to MCG.  The contribution was more than $12.5 million in October 2002, nearly $11 million in November 2003, more than $11 million in October 2004, more than $7.5 million in October 2005, more than $9.4 million in October 2006 and more than $10.1 million in October 2007.
